Transition and Move Occupancy Services (455 bed facility)
TIMELINE: 16 months

Details:
The North East Building Project was an 8 story tower expansion completed in the Spring of 2005. It was complex due to the fact that most of the expanding departments were from all over the hospital's 455-bed campus, and there were numerous transportation issues. This project included a total replacement Lab; D&T floor with GI Lab, Radiology, NucMed & Cath Lab; surgical floor with 10 new ORs, PACU and ICU; L&D dept. with PP unit and NICU; three 32-bed Med/Surg floors.

Challenges:
The new Laboratory required highly detailed and creative planning due to the complexity of electrical and plumbing issues and the blending of relocated and new equipment plus an open physical environment and the development of an entirely new design process for work flow/specimen flow.

The relationship of the new building with a major degree of patient services and the existing buildings which housed all of the non-clinical support departments necessitated development of a complex transportation plan to insure the efficient and safe delivery of materials and supplies from multiple departments along a common pathway with limited exterior travel.

Results:
Our scope of work utilized an approach that promoted a communication plan that integrated project staff, facility staff, support staff and direct patient care staff into effective collaborative transition teams and partners. The plan resulted in the development of consensus about the project among the facility's users plus clarity about and support for the project overall.

Our organized approach to consistently meeting, recording information, cross-communicating with all other project team members (i.e. construction, architects) resulted in identification of issues or concerns that, when caught early enough, eliminated costly change orders or allowed for 'timely' planning to correct necessary changes.
